Sjótækni ehf. in Tálknafjörður wishes all employees, customers and partners a happy new year and thanks for the past year.

It is safe to say that the new year greets with winter weather and this has an effect on the operations of Sjótækni and partners. Sjótækni's boats have mostly been tied to the pier due to the weather since before Christmas and little can be done. Hopefully, however, the weather will start to subside so that it will be possible to start carrying out the tasks that are waiting to be solved. However, it is always possible to take comfort in the fact that the sun is rising and the day is getting longer. When the weather started improving around noon today, the accompanying photos were taken of the boat Fálki in Tálknafjarðarhöfn and snow covered houses in the harbour area in Tálknafjörður.

Sjótækni in bridge work, Humidur for the first time in Iceland

This summer and autumn, the employees of Sjótækni have been working on the bridge over the eastern estuary of Héraðsvatn in Skagafjörður. The steel pieces under the bridge were sandblasted and sprayed with the surface material Humidur, for which Sjótækni is authorized in Iceland. The project was carried out for Vegagerðin and in close collaboration with Acotec in Belgium, which is the manufacturer of Humidur. The project was quite complicated as floating scaffolding had to be used under the bridge to get to the bits when the material was sprayed, but it went well despite the different weather conditions. The project was completed at the end of September and was successful. This is the first time that the surface material Humidur is used in Iceland and it will be exciting to see how it turns out in Icelandic weather conditions. The bridge is right down by the sea in Skagafjörður and on the bridge there are northerly winds that carry salt deposits with the associated erosion of the steel pieces. It will therefore be interesting to observe in the future what effect these conditions have on the erosion of the pieces after the substance Humidur has been applied to them.

At Vegagerðin's conference in Harpa on November 1, Sjótækni's employees will present the project and its implementation and provide interested parties with further information on the material Humidur and its possible uses.

Sjótækni´s survey boat in port measurements

Sjótækni‘s new survey boat has been used this summer in various projects and has had great results. Most recently, it was used to inspect the condition of the bottom of the harbour, where a considerable traffic of ships and boats is present. Pictures from the boat clearly show where the tires that have fallen off the pier lie at the bottom of the harbour. It is also clear how the current from the propellers of ships and boats begins to flush material at the bottom of the harbour from the steel bulkhead and form an elevation outside the bulkhead, which means decreasing depth at the harbour edge and less support for the steel bulkhead. The usefulness of such images is unequivocal when it comes to estimating the cost and work of repairs to piers and harbours. The pictures show how many tires are on the bottom and therefore it is easy to estimate the cost of diving to clean them up. It is also easy to monitor and assess the depths in the harbours with these images so that the harbours always have the correct information for the ships passing through.
